White Lung - It's The Evil

listen to Like Dad by White Lung

Surprising stuff, by Canadian band White Lung (facebook). Basically this is Melt-Banana oriented stuff, but a lot closer to a punk rock sound and mentality. Guitars smothered in an alienating effect, yelping vocals and funky uptempo drum-patterns. Especially the latter make this as catchy as any punkrock band, while the vocals remind of Melt Banana’s screeching schouts and the guitars of Hot Snakes profound post-punk/punk rock sound. I am not stating any obvious influences (although I wouldn’t be surprised if I was spot on), only trying to label their overall sound to give you a first impression. If you’re not sure, you should know I just seriously want you to check this out. It’s briljant. All killer, no filler.

Crimes – Let’s March To The Drums Of Sin

Probably the freshest music ever presented on this blog, Crimes (blog) is a fairly new Belgian (Antwerp) two-man project with the drummer and guitarist from James Berlin. A well-balanced mixture of early hardcore and gritty garage (punk/)rock balanced out with soothing vocals and catchy rythms. I missed out way too often, to see them live and I hope I'm the last one to do so, cause I hear it's a blast.

Out Of The box on sunday XI (fixed!!)

listen to Puss by The Jesus Lizard

ever wondered where bands like Daughters, These Arms Are Snakes and Young Widows got that what the fuck(ed up) sound from? that not sure if want awkward song-structures and vocals with seemingly random words and riffs. The kind that really grows on you! The Jesus Lizard (website) were doing it, back when Nirvana was still underground enough to do a split with such a band (which they did). rooted in the late 80's and early 90's alternative rock, their twist to it consisted of that sound of sheer insanity and al-ways catchy hooks. the latter may need to sink in, as it is smothered in the chaos and noise, so don't give up on it too soon.

The Shitty Limits - Here Are The Limits

my, my, my. I was absolutely smitten with this band, after seeing them live. around that time, I was wildly into The Dead Kennedys and early The Hives, because of that up-tempo garage/surf rock sound. this band -especially live- displays everything that I love about that certain indefinite guitar sound that I vaguely described, just now. the mangled and pourly articulated vocals sound like the singer is extremy drunk or trying to outshine David Yow in garbling his speech. acting like a fit Iggy Pop on stage adds to this all the more. so all in all a most brilliant hotchpotch of elements combined in one band.
