The Smackdown - Someone Has To Kill The Headwriter + Calling The Spots

Gentlemens Establishment by The Smackdown

In their deepest foundation, The Smackdown (myspace with unreleased songs) was like The Blood Brothers playing Das Oath or Refused playing Charles Bronson songs. Spastic as well as rapid and crushing as well as tuneful. The band sounded like powerviolence/hardcore kids just straight up rocking out and playing the recorded noisy rock’n roll they’ve improvised at 70 RPM in stead of 30 RPM. The thought of watching flesh and blood beings play this music on a live stage leaves me shivering, imagining it could quite possibly have resembled rather something out of a Francis Bacon painting than any kind of rock concert, or watching a the Hives gig in fast forward on a barely functioning tv screen. Static included. RIP. shares member(s) with Anchor.

Griever - Inferior

Black Vinyl Clouds by Griever

Ex-Lewd Acts band Griever (bandcamp) consists of hoarse yet emotional vocals supporting stirring dark hardcore mixed with melodic punk rock guitars. Altough it’s an entirely different band, their style would compliment that of bands like Burning Love, End Of A Year, Fucked Up or even Off With Their Heads and early The Bronx or Hot Water Music, in the same gritty punk rock class, with a very distinct style of their own. hardcore sensibilities in raw as hell punk rock music that both crush as hard as any ‘extreme’ band and move as passionately as any mellow emotional music.

Suffocate For Fuck Sake – Blazing Fires And Helicopters On The Frontpage

Blue Lights And Sunshine by Suffocate For Fucks Sake

It might be a close call, but Suffocate For Fuck Sake (myspace) seems like the most ambient atmospheric music with shouting vocals that’s ever graced these ears. This is something far beyond post rock with tormented screeching/screaming (like Devil Sold His Soul)and occasional mellow indie (like EF) singing. In fact, this release probably even has more spoken word samples, in some scandinavian gibberish, but that works for what it is, than actual singing by their vocalist. It works. All of it. The tempo or ambience don’t build up exponentially, but rather brick by brick, making the climax unbearably moving and the overall sound unrelentlessly holding its grip on the listener’s attention, with absolute awe and heart-rending passion.
This all coming from someone who long gave up on the ‘twinkly ambient post-whatever’. I adore this. All of this. I heard people think it’s boring, but I think that’s what happend when you listen but don’t pay close enough attention to nuances and such. Somebody get me this sort of band to do the vocals for.
turns out the full name to this album is "Blazing fires and helicopters on the frontpage of the newspaper. There´s a war going on and I´m marching in heavy boots"

Out Of The Box On Sunday XXII

Build me a wreck by Tar... Feathers

I became fond of this band after helping the vocalist to a show for his solo-tour in which he played the songs from this release all by himself. Just this band’s voice, a clean sounding Fender Jag and the audience clapping their hands to the rythm for percussion. Tar... Feathers (their blog) is a Modest Mouse –worshipping (almost Lo Fi) indie rock band that blends the most fragile vocals with eerie -almost broken or detuned- sounding melodies, in support of extremely melodramatic lyrics. As I said the (early) Modest Mouse influences can not be overlooked, even more so in te vocals than the tunes, but it’s also not as if they shove those in your face. They have a style with plenty of personal creative input to distinguish themselves. Just wish I could get you to listen to the solo songs, my love for this band might be biased by that experience. Let me know what you think!
